William Chapman Ralston, San Francisco businessman and financier, was born in Plymouth, Ohio, in 1826. He arrived in San Francisco in 1854, and ten years later, when he organized the Bank of California, he became one of the most important and powerful men in California. State Survey, Geologist of Cal., 1860-74, opened Harvard School of Mines, 1868, elected to Geol. Soc. of London. Author of Metal Wealth of the U.S. and other books.
